Be careful Chinese New Year oranges

I think we'd better just stay away from China foodstuff, just to be safe!!!

Dear All,

Chinese new year is drawing near. When buying Chinese oranges please beware of the worms inside. These worms are very similar to the texture of the orange and therefore can only be observed if you look carefully (long sighted person may not
notice).

The Chinese government had in fact made efforts to destroy hundreds of tons of these oranges and compensate the farmers for these. But however some culprit may still sell it illegally. That's why we need to be careful.

Whether the worms are harmful to the human body or not is still questionable. But generally if small quantities are consumed it should not cause any major harm according to doctors. It is advisable to be careful about it.

What Is Addictive Disease And Why Is Smoking...

What is addictive disease and why is smoking considered an addictive disease?

The term addictive disease or addiction describes a persistent habit that is harmful to the person. Thus, addiction is a chronic (long duration) disease with reliance on the substance causing the addiction. The addictive substance also causes the accompanying deterioration of a person's physical and psychological health.

Psychologically, an individual's behavior pattern establishes how the addictive substance is used. One type of behavior is compulsive behavior, which is an overwhelming and irresistible interest in use of the substance. For example, the compulsive addict makes sure that the substance is always available. Another type of behavior is habitual behavior, which is using the substance regularly or occasionally for the desirable effects. Physically, continuous use of the substance leads to dependence on the drug by the body. This dependence means that when the drug is discontinued, symptoms of withdrawal or distress occur.

Nicotine is the component of cigarettes that addicts. Almost immediately upon inhalation, the body responds to the nicotine. An individual feels relaxed, calmer, and happier than before the inhalation. These pleasant feelings reflect the physical side of addiction; but then, doing without cigarettes causes craving for more cigarettes, irritability, impatience, anxiety, and other unpleasant symptoms. Indeed, these symptoms are the symptoms of withdrawal from cigarettes. What's more, over time, more and more nicotine is desired to produce the favorable effects and to avoid the symptoms of withdrawal.

What are the signs of cigarette addiction?

The signs of addiction to cigarettes include:

Smoking more than seven cigarettes per day
Inhaling deeply and frequently
Smoking cigarettes containing nicotine levels more than 0.9mg
Smoking within 30 minutes of awakening in the morning
Finding it difficult to eliminate the first cigarette in the morning
Smoking frequently during the morning
Finding it difficult to avoid smoking in smoking-restricted areas
Needing to smoke even if sick and in bed

Chemotherapy: Boon or Bane?

Chemotherapy, also called chemo, is the common term for medicines used to treat cancer. The treatment destroys cancer cells, keeps them from growing and spreading, shrinks the size of a tumor or relieves cancer symptoms.

Chemotherapy has given hope to numerous cancer patients. However, a recent study by The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD) shows that chemotherapy can often do more harm than good. This is the main reason why doctors are now being advised to be more careful in offering chemo as treatment, particularly to cancer patients.

The NCEPOD study revealed that for more than 600 cancer patients who died within a month upon receiving treatment, 27% got worse and died faster after undergoing chemotherapy.

Though chemotherapy is the usual course of treatment for cancer nowadays, Dr. Joseph Mercola is not convinced that it is the best option. Though it may lengthen a patients life by a couple of months in some cases, it can also end up killing them prematurely

Chemotherapy may do more harm than good to a cancer patient due to its effects on the bodys cells. Yes, this conventional treatment can kill cancer cells but it can also destroy healthy cells at the same time. Chemo prevents the rapid reproduction and division of cells which are found in bone marrow, cells in the digestive system and reproductive system as well as cells found in hair follicles.

Fortunately, there are natural, safer and more effective alternatives to chemotherapy. Dr. Mercola recommends the use of Vitamin D, healthy lifestyle choices and emotional management for the treatment and prevention of cancer.

Calcitriol is the most powerful steroid hormone in your body and is produced in the tissues of individuals with optimum levels of Vitamin D. It has been shown to fight cancer because it stimulates cell differentiation and controls cell proliferation.
Since cancer patients usually have low levels of Vitamin D, it is crucial for them to optimize their levels of this nutrient.

Cancer patients should be given up to 80-90 ng/ml of Vitamin D to help optimize their levels. The proper diet, exercise and healthy choice of food will also boost the patients resistance. And, avoiding negative and stressful emotions will definitely make a cancer patient feel much better. Make sure that the patients feel positive. Help them keep their faith and always give them hope.

These are just some of Dr. Mercolas recommendations in the fight against cancer. Cancer is a deadly disease but we are not powerless against it.

The Difference that World AIDS Day has Made

Last December 1, the whole world was re-united for the 20th anniversary of the World AIDS Day. Accompanied with this years theme, leadership from all sectors, including government, but also leaders among individuals and families, communities, non-profits and other organizations.

All HIV/AIDS victim and even those who do not suffer stand up and participate in this event. Not just for the symbol of red ribbon, not just for the donations and fundraising ideas but also for the voluntary works of all soft-hearted individuals who find time to get involved on this special event. Even bloggers joined this event with the same mission to make the world a better place. Bloggers found time to make a difference by attempting to harness the power of the blogosphere. This is in cooperation with NIDA and AIDS.gov, both of these organizations recognize the leadership of Bloggers Unite. Together with the bloggers, the mission to prevent and stop the spread of HIV/AIDS has been successful.

With around 33 million people infected by HIV, it is really important that the community work together just by being part of the ever growing leaders who fight against the spread of AIDS. Through words, voices and simple actions, HIV/AIDS can be gradually prevented and treated. And this is what happened during the World AIDS Day. A lot of bloggers became a part of this organization. They added a badge to their own blog to show the world that they have joined thousands of bloggers as well with one comparable aim to answer the call for action to recognize World AIDS Day 2008.

Do Not Use Medical Card During Emergency!

PROPER WAY TO USE THE MEDICAL CARD

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY!!!

In cases of Emergency, a matter of LIFE & DEATH e.g.
1) Heart-attack
2) Strokes
3) Accidents etc.

NEVER..
NEVER..
NEVER use a medical card!

Why?....

1. In the emergency room, you will be asked to register and make a 'Deposit'
BEFORE the patient is TREATED!

2. When you show the medical card, the doctor MUST complete the claim form and
fax to the insurance company BEFORE they can treat the patient. The hospital
MUST wait until the insurance company Confirms coverage & limit of policy.

3. ALL these procedures may take 1-2 HOURS!! By this time the patient may have
lapsed into a coma!!

4. Use your credit card or Cash FIRST. AFTER the patient has been treated &
attended by the doctor, then show the admission counter nurse the medical card.
She will then liaise with the insurance company directly for the approvals. She
will tear the earlier credit card deposit once the insurance company has
approved.

5. By now the patient would have been wheeled into the room to rest or to the
surgery room for immediate surgery. Sincerely we pray no one has to go through
such an ordeal.
